Soundtrack
Rationale: This song starts out about a guy who is infatuated by a girl and is creeping on her in a crowded room. The chorus says, "and I don't want to take your freedom, I don't want to change your mind, I don't have to make you love me, I just want to take your time." Which fits along perfectly with Ty's thought process. He isn't forcing Gemma to fall in love with him. But he obviously just wanted to take all of her time; that is why he kidnapped her in the first place.
Rationale: The song starts out, "it's been a long day without you my friend, and I'll tell you all about it when I see you again." The chorus also says, "we've come a long way from where we began, oh I'll tell you all about it when I see you again." This reminds me of Gemma as she is in the Australian Outback thinking about her family. When Ty kidnapped her he took her away from everyone, and the life she knew. The song is about missing someone dearly and Gemma clearly would be thinking about her mom and dad as this song plays in the background.
Rationale: While Gemma was in the desert she attempted many times to escape from her kidnapper. I can imagine Ty dedicating this song to Gemma. It starts out by talking about how he thinks she is already leaving, and her hand is on the door. The main part of the song says, "I think you're so mean, I think we should try, I think I could need this in my life." Which is exactly how Ty feels about Gemma; he wants her to stop trying to run away from him.
Rationale: At first Gemma is afraid of Ty and thinks he might try to kill her. This song says, "and don't take this personal, but you're the worst you know what you've done to me." But then throughout the book, Gemma starts to sympathize with Ty, and gains some feelings towards him. The song continues to say, "and although it hurts I know, I just can't keep running away." Which is exactly what Gemma realizes that there is no way to run away from him in the desert she was stranded in. The chorus of the song goes, "I don't need you, but I want you," which goes along with Gemma's independent and strong personality to a tee.
Rationale: Ty could sing this song to Gemma any time during the novel and it would make perfect sense. Part of the lyrics go, "yeah you want her, but she's so mean." Gemma is rude to Ty throughout most of the novel until she starts to catch feelings for him. The song also states, "you'll never let her go, why don't you let her go?" Which is what I wanted to ask Ty the whole time while I was reading! If he really loved her he would want what would make her the most happy, and that would be to just let her go back home- but he wouldn’t just let her go.
Rationale: Gemma is left alone in the Australian outback as Ty goes off for his daily routine of painting. Part of this song says, "see our word is slowly dying I'm not wasting no more time, don't think I could believe you." She is left alone with only her thoughts, which go along with even more song lyrics like- "yeah when there'll be just silence and when life will be over, don't think you will forgive you." At the end of the book, I thought once he got arrested and his mind cleared up a bit then he would see what he did to her, and probably wouldn't be able to forgive himself. The artist of this song is very wise and states a clear message, just like Gemma's character developed throughout the novel.
Rationale: This song goes along with one side of the controversy at the end of the novel. Most readers believe that Gemma got Stockholm syndrome and didn't actually fall in love with Ty. The song starts out by saying "she used to dance when the band played, she used to be the trusting kind." Just like Gemma before she was kidnapped and taken away from the life she knew. The chorus then states, "she don't love you she's just lonely". Which is exactly how it portrays her feelings towards Ty in most people’s opinion.
Rationale: Ty is not a stereotypical kidnapper. He is young and has a very attractive body. Over time, Gemma comes to see Ty in a new light in which he is more sensitive than just a criminal. The mysteries of Ty and the mystery of her new life start to take hold. She begins to feel something for her Ty when he wakes up screaming in the middle of the night. Over the time spent with her him, Gemma’s appreciation of him develops. This song could be played while she starts to think about Ty’s body, and romanticize about him.
Rationale: “It happened like this. I was stolen from an airport. Taken from everything I knew, everything I was used to. Taken to sand and heat, dirt and danger. And he expected me to love him. This is my story. A letter from nowhere,” Gemma says. The song's main chorus goes, “I am in misery, there aint nobody that can comfort me.” Which is exactly how she feels in this tragic experience she is forced to go through. But on the other hand Ty has another point of view. He has other ideas for her, his childhood experience of living in outback Australia has forever changed the way he sees things. Unlike Gemma, he sees an opportunity for a new kind of life in Australia, so this song could also connect to Tys feelings. For example there is a part in the song that goes, “Why do you do what you do to me, yeah why won’t you answer me answer me?”
1. Title: Sad Beautiful Tragic
Artist: Taylor Swift
Rationale: This song represents the novel as a whole. Out of the entire song list, this would be the theme song of the soundtrack. It talks about a couple having a beautiful magic love affair, as well as a sad and beautiful tragic love affair. Gemma and Ty started out on really bad terms when he first kidnapped her. Throughout the book they began to form a romantic bond. At the end of the book when Gemma went back to her family, she claimed that she fell in love with Ty. Her parents and the doctors all told her that it was not actually love, and they diagnosed her with stockholm syndrome. It is tragic that nobody believed her if she actually was in love. The ending of the novel leaves it up to the reader to decide if it was a beautiful magic love affair- or a beautiful tragic love affair.
