1) Coffee Cup
Gemma’s coffee cup started it all. At the airport, Ty was watching Gemma and finally approached her. As he got her coffee, he dropped in the drugs that would change Gemma’s life forever. Gemma soon became unaware of what she was saying or where she was. That one sip of coffee led Gemma to the Australian desert less than a day later under Ty’s actions.
2) Truck
The truck seems to be Gemma’s only hope for escaping Ty. She figured, it got them there so it should be able to get her back. The one chance that Gemma gets, she blows it. On half a tank of gas she barely makes it to the hills she can see in the distance. It’s there that she abandons the truck and ends up crawling back to the house. Later on, as Ty brings her to the mines, they pass the truck again revealing Gemma had chosen the right path for escape originally.

3) Butter knife
The first time Gemma explores Ty’s house, she finds a dull knife. She takes it and keeps it under her pillow. In the beginning, she tries her best to keep track of the days she has been with him by making notches in the side of her bed. There are many times that Gemma considers killing him with it, but she never makes that attempt. The knife shows off the need to protect herself.

4) Painting
Ty makes the paint he uses out of all natural ingredients found in the desert. When he goes out to the Seperates, Gemma always thought he was doing weird things and plotting to kill her. One day, he led her to see what he was really doing. He had painted the walls of the rocks just like the desert. He also had the front of his body painted and asked her to paint the back. This seemed to be the first time Gemma had strong, loving feelings for Ty.

5) Anti-venom
Throughout the whole time Ty and Gemma are in the desert, Ty had been catching snakes and extracting their venom. His plan was to make anti-venom so they would always be safe out there. He had almost every snake caught when Gemma got herself bitten by one. The attempted use of his first batch of anti-venom did not work the way he thought it would. He played it off lightly, but when Gemma’s leg swelled up and began burning, he knew it was not enough. As a result, Ty had to bring Gemma back to a hospital and let her free.
