Did you like the book Stolen? Sara: I thought that Stolen had a really interesting topic and perspective on the situation. It put the reader in the position of the stolen girl and allowed us to feel and experience everything that happened the way she did. It’s interesting because as a reader, you start to understand Ty, just like Gemma does. Like she explains in the book, it’s hard to hate someone once you understand them. The reader starts to sympathize with him instead of hate him as a criminal. I thought, however, that the novel dragged on a little bit. It was kind of boring at parts because nothing really happened; they were just stuck in the middle of the desert. However, there were also parts that I couldn’t put down because they were so interesting to me. Overall, I would give this book a good rating.
Devyn: I personally did not really like Stolen. I believe that the novel had great ideas, but they did not approach them the best way. The main idea of a girl getting kidnapped, falling in love with her kidnapper, and not knowing if it is real or stockholm syndrome is a great idea for a novel. The problem, I believe, lays with the characters themselves. It was frustrating how naive Gemma was and how creepy Ty could be. The book also was very slow especially during the middle of the novel. I believe this idea could sell a lot better than the actual book did and that if it was rewritten with more action and better characters it could be more popular.
Colleen: The beginning chapters of this book really caught my attention. I figured this book would be full of action, thrill, and would keep me on the edge of my seat while reading. Once the kidnapping took place and Gemma was in the desert with Ty, it slowly started to get less interesting. Once I reached the middle of the book I was more than bored with it. With the same things happening over and over again it became predictable. The ending of the book came as a shock to me, I never thought that Ty would return Gemma or that he cared more about her than himself.
Haley: Stolen is a simple read for anyone. The story is drawn out longer than it should be and key events need to be emphasized more throughout the novel. There is not much to take away from this book. Regardless of how the book followed through, the idea of telling the story from Gemma’s point of view worked well with the storyline. Because she was there, you really get a good perspective on stockholm syndrome and how it develops. If I were to give this book a rating, it would be slightly above a rotten tomato, making it a fresh tomato, with a solid 65%.
Arielle: I really didn't like this book very much after the first few 50 pages. It got boring and predictable. The fact that the book took place in the desert didn't make it very interesting to me. The author had good idea with the book using Stockholm syndrome as the main focus and from Gemma's perspective was interesting to see develop throughout the novel. Although I liked the idea of the book, I think the author took a great idea and didn't take it to its full potential. I personally think that the book could have been great with a different author writing it.
Brooke: The beginning of the book captured my attention from the start. I was enthralled by the idea of the main character Gemma getting kidnapped, and falling in love with her kidnapper Ty. Once they arrived at the desert was the point it started to get boring for me; then it just went downhill from there. The story itself wasn't engaging anymore because there was rarely any action. If the authors would have added a lot more intensity throughout the whole novel I would've wanted to not put the book down from start to finish... Although the writers did do a good job sparking controversy at the end, leaving it up to the readers to decide if Gemma actually fell in love with Ty or if it was just Stockholm Syndrome.
