On Friday, August 14, at 7p.m. the Stolen movie premiere will begin. The premiere will be held at Grauman’s Chinese Theater off Hollywood Boulevard in L.A.. The movie is based off of a best selling novel by Lucy Christopher, also titled Stolen.
The film begins with a teenager named Gemma who meets an irresistible young man named Ty at the airport while on a holiday with her parents. However, things take a turn when Gemma wakes up in the middle of a dessert with her kidnapper, Ty, who expects her to love him. Ty’s tragic childhood has left him with the idea that he is saving Gemma from her old life. Through out the movie you’ll find yourself not only understanding Ty, but feeling for him as well. It’s clear that Ty is in the wrong, but things start to get blurred when Gemma learns about his past and realizes his intentions aren’t bad. The movie leaves it up to you to decide whether it really is love or Stockholm Syndrome.
Obviously this movie has had a lot of debate and a lot of controversy with a topic like Stockholm Syndrome. Some people are revolted, but the majority seem to be curious. It seems as though the writers are winning here, because the controversy over the film seems to be drawing people in.
Directors Gary Ross, director of The Hunger Games, and Josh Boone, director of The Fault in Our Stars, have made in interesting team in the filming of this movie. Both directors stated that they were excited to incorporate both of their styles into the movie. I believe that the two will work together well in order to grasp not only the emotional portions of the movie, but hopefully incorporate some much need action into it as well. Actor Liam Hemsworth talked with me the other day about his role as Ty in the upcoming movie, “I was excited and a little nervous to get into Ty’s head” he admits. Liam is commonly known for his role in The Hunger Games as Gale. Hemsworth has never played a role quite this intense or...for lack of a better word, odd. Actor Emma Watson is playing Gemma and spoke to us recently about the film, “The role of Gemma so unique; a girl coming to age, developing her own life and then just get rips away. I am so thankful for the opportunity and I hope I have done her character justice”.
Their budget is generously set at $100 million including marketing costs, “above the line” costs and “below the line” costs. Due to this high set budget we would hope that the reviews would be high and mighty; however, Rotten Tomatoes gave the book a disappointing 33%. Reviews held comments from highly known critics such as Colleen Graves who stated, "Once I reached the middle of the book I was more than bored with it". Critic Haley Sullivan thought that, "The story is drawn out longer than it should be and key events need to be emphasized more throughout the novel". Of course, these were all reviews of the novel and we can hope that, when released, the movie will be held higher than the book!
